The Role
As a Forensic Electrical Engineer, you will investigate problems in the built environment and provide evidence-based solutions founded on rigorous science and physics. We assist attorneys, property managers, building owners, contractors, manufacturers, and design professionals with a wide range of engineering and architectural issues. This position focuses on the investigation and analysis of electrical systems for the insurance and litigation market.
The candidate must be willing to learn about site power distribution, building distribution, lighting, fire alarm, security, emergency power generation, cogeneration, UPS, and mission-critical systems for industrial, commercial, and hospitality facilities. Interest in renewable energy systems including; photovoltaic arrays, wind turbines, and hydroelectric generator is highly desirable. A strong understanding of electrical engineering principles is required as is the desire and ability to learn more. You must be able to write well and continue to improve your writing skills.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to perform forensic investigations, including fire origin and cause investigations, identify the cause and origin of incidents that lead to electrical failures within industrial, commercial, and residential locations. You will be expected to support and learn from senior engineers. Your work will be varied and may include travel and fieldwork.
While project work can vary greatly from day to day, your responsibilities will include the following:
- On-site survey, investigation, and documentation of existing conditions and electrical system malfunctions.
- Preparation of field notes and technical and investigative reports to support forensics findings.
- Preparation of materials related to presentations.
- Review and research applicable building codes, NEC, and all other applicable industry standards, etc.
- Create drawings and specifications and perform construction administration services.
- Assist the engineering team in the review of reports, plans and specifications.
Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering is required.
- Engineer In Training (E.I.T.) Certification is desired.
- 2-5 years of relevant experience.
- Working knowledge of electrical power systems and building codes.
- Ability to clearly express engineering opinions and conclusions, in writing, and support these conclusions/opinions with facts and sound engineering principles.
- Ability to work collaboratively with other disciplines, meet deadlines, and travel to work sites as required.
- Be familiar and comfortable with Microsoft Suite programs (i.e.Word, Excel,PowerPoint) and CAD programs (i.e.AutoCAD).Familiarity with any of the following programs is a plus, but not required:Revit,MicroStation, and Bluebeam.
CompensationThe rate for this position generally is$90,000-$110,000annually.This range is a good faith estimate provided pursuant to the New York Pay Transparency Law. It is based on what a successful New York applicant might be paid and assumes that the successful candidate will be in New York or perform the position from New York. Similar positions located outside of New York will not necessarily receive the same compensation.Actual pay rates may vary from the range, as permitted byNew YorkEqual Pay Transparency Law. Compensation offers will be based on various factors, including operational needs, individual education, qualifications and experience, work location and comparison to employee already in the role, as well as other considerations permitted by law. A potential new employee's pay history will not be used in compensation decisions.
