The City of Brookhaven is hiring for a General Laborer position for the city's Water Department.

Summary: Performs a variety of unskilled or semi-skilled maintenance work, and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of city water, sewer, and storm drainage facilities and systems.

Examples of Work

Determines the location of water and sewer lines from the appropriate sources prior to excavation
Responds to complaints regarding water leaks, pressure loss or no water; evaluates situation; explains findings to supervisor
Insures proper maintenance of equipment and tools; routine cleaning
May drive trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, gravel, and sand
Performs routine inspection and preventative maintenance; refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor
Excavates, inspects, cuts, fits, lays, repairs, taps, cleans, and flushes water mains, lines, and service
Assist with installation, repair, and maintenance of manholes, fire hydrants, valves, meters, meter vaults, and boxes
Services water supply, sewer lift, and other pumps
Operates power equipment
Other duties as assigned

Education and/or Experience:

High School Diploma or GED/HSE equivalent

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Must have and maintain a valid State driver's license and CDL certification, or ability to obtain CDL.
Class A, B, or D is acceptable for CDL requirement
If you only have a Class R, this position will start at $9.36 p/h.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:

Must be able to pass a drug/background screen
Some knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance construction, and repair activities
Skill in operation of job-related tools and equipment
Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time
Ability to effectively understand, communicate, and carry out written and verbal instruction
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
Working knowledge of occupational hazards
