The City of Brookhaven is hiring for a General Laborer position for the city's Water Department.
Summary: Performs a variety of unskilled or semi-skilled maintenance work, and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of city water, sewer, and storm drainage facilities and systems.
Examples of Work
- Determines the location of water and sewer lines from the appropriate sources prior to excavation
- Responds to complaints regarding water leaks, pressure loss or no water; evaluates situation; explains findings to supervisor
- Insures proper maintenance of equipment and tools; routine cleaning
- May drive trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, gravel, and sand
- Performs routine inspection and preventative maintenance; refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor
- Excavates, inspects, cuts, fits, lays, repairs, taps, cleans, and flushes water mains, lines, and service
- Assist with installation, repair, and maintenance of manholes, fire hydrants, valves, meters, meter vaults, and boxes
- Services water supply, sewer lift, and other pumps
- Operates power equipment
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications

Education and/or Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED/HSE equivalent
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- Must have and maintain a valid State driver's license and CDL certification, or ability to obtain CDL.
- Class A, B, or D is acceptable for CDL requirement
- If you only have a Class R, this position will start at $9.36 p/h.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:
- Must be able to pass a drug/background screen
- Some knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance construction, and repair activities
- Skill in operation of job-related tools and equipment
- Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time
- Ability to effectively understand, communicate, and carry out written and verbal instruction
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Working knowledge of occupational hazards
