Job Description:
Leading design gallery R & Company is searching for a Lead Art Handler to join their Operations Department. As a Lead Art Handler, you will be responsible for applying your knowledge of the safe and secure movement of artworks and artifacts. You will assist in all aspects of preparation, packing, transporting, installation/deinstallation and storage of works for clients. The ideal candidate understands that the safety and security of artworks and of fellow team members is critical to both individual and company success. You will report to the Operations Managers and work between the Manhattan galleries and Brooklyn warehouse. You will be required to maintain a clean driving record and will regularly be required to drive company vehicles for installations in the immediate and tri-state region. You will ensure quality standards and safety of gallery assets and inventory and work with the Operations Managers in planning and implementation of gallery exhibition installations, pop-ups, and art fairs.
Job Duties include but are not limited to:
Daily routines at both the Warehouse and the Galleries including:
• Supervise and lead team of freelancers on execution of daily duties such as proper handling,
cleaning, loading, locating, recording, and routing.
•Understanding and execution of art handling fundamentals and practices
•Inspect artworks prior to handling to ensure proper handling and demonstrates care when handling objects of various mediums
•Understanding of archival and other packing materials for various mediums
•Complete wrapping and packing of works for transport or storage
•Work closely with the Creative Director and the Operational Managers, to coordinate the
efficient and timely installation of exhibitions and design fair booths by anticipating
requirements for every layout, including paint, construction, lighting, installation and de-
installation equipment and personnel.
• Work closely with the Head Registrar, Production Manager, and Shipping Manager to
execute exhibitions utilizing the work order system to ensure timely, smooth and
consistent processes.
• Maintain areas for receiving, packing, registration, photography, delivery, and storage;
• Supervise delivery, installation and deinstallation of Gallery exhibitions and at Art Fairs
including packing, loading, transport, delivery and installation.
• Install artworks including design works, sculpture and illuminated sculptures,
work with technical team on on-site installations.
• Drive a Sprinter Van and Truck (up to 26’) (or similar) in NYC safely and effectively.
• Occasional Long distance driving with evening, weekend or overnight travel (Tristate areas).
• Light construction and finishing including but not limited to simple crates, spackling, sanding &
painting etc.
• Assist with the Galleries up keep including paint touch up, lighting maintenance, trash
removal etc.
Additional Requirements:
• 4+ Years of Fine Art Service Experience or comparable skillset
• Experience with leading a fluid team of freelancers.
• Availability outside of normal working hours (9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Monday to Friday) and / or on
weekends.
• Heavy lifting - physical ability to move furniture including couches, desks, tables etc.
• Clean NY Driver's License Record.
• Basic knowledge of packing methods and materials involved with art works, design
works and vintage furniture.
• Knowledge of installation techniques, equipment, hardware, and execution.
• Ability to plan and implement solutions to issues as they arrive. Strong organizational and
problem-solving skills required. Detail oriented.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Professional presentation and demeanor.
• Diligence; good work ethic; and a friendly and supportive orientation to clients, vendors
and colleagues are fundamental to the position.
