Position Title: Circulation & Audience Development Manager
Reports To: Chief Financial Officer
Status: Full-time

From our base in New York, Aperture connects global audiences and supports artists through our acclaimed quarterly magazine, books, exhibitions, digital platforms, public programs, limited-edition prints, and awards. Established in 1952 to advance “creative thinking, significantly expressed in words and photographs,” Aperture champions photography’s vital role in nurturing curiosity and encouraging a more just, tolerant society.
With a capital campaign underway and new five-year strategic plan, Aperture is preparing to move from Chelsea to a new, permanent home at 380 Columbus Avenue on the Upper West Side in 2025.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Circulation & Audience Development Manager is responsible for the operations and sustainability of Aperture magazine, which has been an essential source of photography and ideas since 1952. This role is key in ensuring that the publication reaches a dedicated audience of art and culture enthusiasts, by managing its circulation and distribution–and seeking inventive ways to sustain and grow our print audience (through subscriptions and individual sales.) The position manages outside distribution vendors, maintains the subscriber database, and coordinates delivery schedules.
The Circulation & Audience Development Manager also works closely with the sales, digital, and communications teams to develop strategies to reach our target audience in order to achieve circulation goals and enhance customer satisfaction. The successful candidate will bring novel thinking, creativity, and an understanding of how specialized print media can thrive in a digital age.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee the distribution of the magazine to subscribers, newsstands, and bookstores
- Manage the magazine’s budget, ensuring cost-effective operations and adherence to financial targets
- Manage key relationships with outside vendors including fulfillment house, mail house, newsstand distributors, and digital providers
- Analyze circulation data and market trends to identify opportunities for growth and improvement
- Develop and implement audience development strategies and initiatives to increase readership and subscription base
- Monitor audience data to inform content and marketing strategies. Translate this data into reports and presentations to communicate information to leadership and larger team
- Manage subscriber-retention efforts, e.g. bills, renewals, and customer service
- Maintain Aperture’s USPS bulk-mail and business-reply accounts
- Calculate each issue’s paper and print-order quantities
- Collaborate with content, marketing, and sales teams to develop promotional campaigns and strategies to attract new audiences
- Conduct market research and competitor analysis to stay abreast of industry trends and adjust circulation strategies accordingly
- Design and oversee magazine promotions at events, trade shows, and art fairs. Participate at shows and fairs as needed
- Collaborate with development department on fundraising initiatives as needed
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, communications, or a related field.
- Proven experience in circulation management, preferably in the publishing or media industry.
- Knowledge of circulation strategies, audience development, and subscription management.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software applications.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.

Aperture will be offering a salary of $65,000- $80,000, depending on experience, along with excellent medical, dental, life, disability, and retirement plan coverage. This position is based out of our New York City office, following a flexible hybrid work model.
