Tanya Bonakdar Gallery, New York seeks an additional Preparator to join its technical staff, with a focus on building management and on-site installs. The Preparator will support the other team members with complex installations and deinstallations of all gallery shows and viewings from beginning to end. This position will also handle multiple tasks at the gallery’s offsite storage facilities and supporting general gallery maintenance. Hours are 5 days a week, Tuesday - Saturday, 10am-6pm.
Duties/Responsibilities:
• Work with Head Preparator to learn how works are installed and develop the ability to manage deinstallation and packing projects independently.
• Work with the registrar to complete condition reports for works upon arrival, and for sold works to be released.
•Assist Head Preparator and Registrar with systems to manage onsite and offsite storage.
•Coordinate and manage multiple viewings at the gallery and installing works for photoshoots
•Ablity to travel for domestic and international art fairs
•Assist with general condition checks and reports
•Ability to meet tight deadlines
•Manage freelance art handlers as required
•Advise on and assist with creating installation guides and maintenance manuals for specific artworks as needed.
•Advise on and/or execute fabrication projects for gallery artists as needed.
•Drive gallery van to and from off-site storage facility as needed.
•Have the ability to learn operation of installation equipment when necessary (scissor lifts, fork lifts, gantries) and large-scale rigging equipment
Facilities and operations management:
• Daily walk-throughs of the exhibition, office, and storage spaces to assess any maintenance
• Proactively touch up wall paint, maintaining a clean and organized work space and exhibition space
• Coordinate with third party companies to manage building maintenance and upkeep (heating, air conditioning, etc)
•Management of physical space, including patching and painting of walls
Required Skills/Abilities:
•Experience with art handling in an art gallery, or equivalent.
•Valid Driver’s License and ability to drive gallery van to and from offsite storage facility when needed.
•Excellent time-management and organizational skills.
•Ability to multitask and successfully track projects from start to finish.
Physical Requirements:
•Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
