Regular, Full-Time, Limited-Term (not to exceed twelve (12) months in duration), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR), Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences (PEPS), Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (CRB) Eradication Project, located at the Hawaii Department of Agriculture (HDOA) on Oahu, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $3,169 - $3,946/Mon.
DUTIES:
Works closely with the Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (CRB) Outreach Lead to implement the programs outreach goals and duties. Maintains a positive public image for CRB operations. Implements a public education and outreach program to raise public awareness about CRB, other invasive species and to generate support for CRB programs efforts to control them. Produces, and maintains outreach materials, and helps to maintain the CRB website and electronic media. Schedules and performs educational presentations to the public and stakeholders. Contacts stakeholders and provides assistance regarding best management practices and achieving compliance with regulations related to CRB. Responds to public reports of CRB activity, complaints, and requests for help in managing CRB. Drives to attend outreach events and offsite meetings. Communicates with public and private property owners and residents to obtain and maintain permission to conduct survey and control operations on public and private property. Conducts trace forward/back investigations with landowners and businesses following significant new detections. Occasionally performs fieldwork, data entry, meeting planning, or analysis. Attends meetings, including but not limited to, community, County, and State level meetings, and writes outreach sections of proposals and report. Must be willing to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed by the project.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
Bachelors Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university.
EXPERIENCE
At least one (1) year of experience working in the field of public outreach, environmental education, or similar type of position. (Experience may be substituted with one to three (1-3) years of related coursework.).
KNOWLEDGE
Demonstrable knowledge of Hawaiian biota and threats from invasive species. General knowledge of Biological Science, Entomology, and the natural and cultural history of Hawaii. Good working knowledge of communication and outreach techniques and methods.
ABILITIES and SKILLS
Must possess excellent communication skills, including public speaking and writing skills, and excellent organizational and time management skills. Good computer skills, including use of presentation and desktop publishing software, and other electronic media. Must possess a valid drivers license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal drivers insurance equivalent to Hawaiis No-Fault Drivers Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment.
Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS
Ability to lift and carry up to forty (40) pounds unassisted.
