Duties: Library Assistants will supervise the Circulation Desk. This includes supervising student employees scheduled to cover the desk and delegating tasks such as but not limited to shelving, sorting, and assisting with the training of other student employees. Supports the Information Literacy & Research unit for a maximum of 8 hours per week. Assist with a variety of tasks including maintaining the Reference desk and library classroom, supervise students on special projects, staff reference desk as needed, reply to patron emails, assist with data collection, and update web page content. Monitors the shared online inbox and responds to inquiries. Attends and participates in regular meetings. Interprets and enforces Library rules and policies while providing effective and courteous public service to library users. Responsible for adhering to New York State law and the American Library Association’s policy regarding the confidentiality of library user records and ensuring student employees under their supervision at the Circulation Desk are in compliance.

Eligible for reassignment, transfer, reachable for appointment from the appropriate eligible list or must meet the following minimum qualifications:
Must Be a Qualified Employee Of New York State And Have Had One Year Of Permanent Competitive Or 55-b/55-c Service As Follows
Promotion Qualifications: one year of permanent competitive, 55-b/55-c, non-competitive or labor class service in a clerical, keyboarding, or secretarial title allocated to Salary Grade 6 or higher.

Non-Competitive Qualifications: must have:
Either 1. graduated from high school or have earned a high school equivalency diploma; AND one year of library clerical experience***;
- Examples of qualifying clerical duties in a library setting may include:
- Maintaining circulation record;
- Processing acquisitions including the receipt and recording of courier-delivered materials and organizing new items;
- Creating and processing interlibrary loan requests (ILL);
- Assisting in collection maintenance including; weeding, shifting, re-shelving, repairing, straightening, inventory, supply orders, and emptying book drop containers to be checked in;
- Assisting and educating patrons in searching the library catalog;
- Assisting patrons in the use of library equipment.
Or 2: thirty semester credit hours of college study including at least NINE semester credit hours of college study in any combination of the following areas:
- Library/Information Science;
- Computer Applications;
- Information Studies.
For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title maybe filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At this time, agencies may recruit and hire employees by making temporary appointments. In May 2024, if a temporary NY HELPS employee is satisfactorily performing in the position, the appointment will be changed from temporary pending Civil Service Commission Action to permanent non-competitive and the official probationary period will begin.
At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to complete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
- Ability to provide customer service and maintain library hours on evenings and weekends during the academic year.
- Ability to interpret and enforce library polices, and maintain the Course Reserves collection
