Susan Sheehan Gallery seeks an experienced gallery assistant for an established gallery dealing primarily in post-war American fine art original prints. The ideal candidate will possess a BA or higher preferably in art history or related field and have experience in a similar position. Superb writing and social media skills, superior organizational skills, the ability to prioritize, the capacity to carefully manage projects and meet deadlines, precise attention to detail, and effective communication skills are necessary to the position.
Duties of this role include but are not limited to:
Sales Support
• Serving as the front-desk presence and initial point of contact for visitors
• Answering phones and greeting clients
• Assisting with responding to sales inquiries received through our website and other online sales platforms
• Creating fact sheets and assisting with compiling research about artists and artworks for review by clients and internal use
• Creating and formatting price lists and press releases for exhibitions and art fairs
• Keeping information about artworks up to date and thoroughly organized across various online platforms and internal files
• Utilizing photoshop and/or similar programs to edit photos and create scale mockups
Communications and Social Media
• Researching and drafting weekly newsletters, art fair e-catalogues, website content, and other promotional materials and advertising as well as proofing and editing materials produced by freelance writers
• Updating the gallery’s social media accounts on a regular schedule, particularly Instagram
• Supporting, suggesting, and implementing new ideas to grow Instagram followers
• Monitoring and helping to analyze marketing data to assess the effectiveness of campaigns
• Overseeing consistency of online presence and content, including the website, social media accounts, email newsletters, and art fair websites
• Maintaining a cohesive master content calendar
• Maintaining and expanding mailing list
General Administration
• Organizing and maintaining office and kitchen supplies and gallery
• Assisting with maintaining gallery inventory and client database
•. Assisting with sourcing and preparing supplies and materials for art fairs
• Performing various administrative tasks as they arise
• Helping in art fair booths as needed
• Supporting gallery owner with both business related and personal projects as assigned
•. Completing other duties as assigned
Requirements:
• BA or higher (art history, arts administration, or related field preferred)
• Minimum 3-5 years full time experience in a gallery, auction house, or art institution; this is not an entry level position, understanding of the workflow of an art gallery preferred
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
• Exceptional research and writing skills
• Ability to take initiative and to take responsibility for completing independent day to day tasks and help with moving special projects forward
• Mac and Google Workspace proficiency (Word and Excel); intermediate Adobe Creative Suite knowledge; experience with CMS database systems; familiarity with Issuu and Mailchimp; Sketch Up skills desirable
• Extensive experience with digital marketing tools and social media platforms, especially Instagram; working knowledge of Google Analytics, CRO and SEO a plus
• Must be extremely detail-oriented and able to prioritize and work on multiple projects at once in a fast-paced environment both independently and as part of a team
• Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines
• Very strong interpersonal skills and comfortable with greeting and speaking with clients
• Basic art handling skills desirable
• Sales experience a plus
The position is full time. The gallery is open Tuesday-Saturday (Monday-Friday during summer) 10am to 6pm, with additional hours needed during art fairs occurring approximately four times a year.
