This is not a remote position. Hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 10 am-6 pm, with occasional evening hours (~1/mo).
Position Overview:
The Director of Production is responsible for the actual coordination and installation of exhibitions, creating audio and video and general oversight of apexart’s gallery space, working closely with the Executive Director and other Directors. Position requires hands-on technical expertise, construction experience and ability, strong organizational skills, and the ability to balance creative problem-solving with logistical oversight. The Director of Production coordinates the design, fabrication, and installation of exhibitions and plays a key role in translating the curatorial and artistic vision into practical reality.
The position involves collaborating with curators from diverse backgrounds and skill levels, assisting with planning and logistics for 10 exhibitions annually (5 in NYC and 5 international), while ensuring adherence to budgetary constraints. The role also includes the safe handling, packing, and transport of artwork, including navigating customs for international shipments. Physical installation duties may include lifting objects over 50 lbs as part of the installation process. Key Responsibilities:
- Exhibition Design & Fabrication:
- Manage the design and fabrication of exhibition components in conjunction with curators, including custom displays, enclosures, and lighting. Ensure that designs align with curatorial goals while staying within budget and space constraints.
- Technology & A/V Integration:
- Oversee the integration of complex media technology, including video, audio, VR, and interactive displays. Ensure the seamless synchronization of media components and troubleshoot any technical issues during installation.
- Shipping, Art Handling & Transport:
- Coordinate the domestic and international shipment of artwork. Work with local shippers, galleries, and customs agents to ensure the safe transport of artworks, following best practices for art handling and packaging.
- Collaboration with Curators & Artists:
- Work closely with a rotating roster of curators from diverse intellectual backgrounds to realize exhibition designs. Offer technical and creative solutions to design challenges and ensure that installations adhere to curators’ and artists’ intentions.
- Project Management:
- Assist in the planning, scheduling, and execution of exhibitions, managing timelines and budgets. Ensure smooth communication between all stakeholders and oversee all stages from concept to deinstallation.
- Physical Installation & Problem-Solving:
- Lead the installation and deinstallation of exhibitions, resolving structural, technical, or logistical issues that may arise. This includes lifting and moving heavy objects (over 50 lbs) safely and efficiently.
- Documentation & Training:
- Document exhibitions through photography, 3D scanning, and video, ensuring comprehensive records. Update training materials and manuals for exhibition production processes.
- Media Technology Expertise:
- Candidates with a deep understanding of media players, multi-channel video sync, and synchronized video/audio playback for exhibitions will be strongly preferred.
Required Skills:
- 3+ years of experience in exhibition production, logistics, and management.
- Exhibition installation experience, including woodworking, hand tools, and problem-solving.
- Proficiency in A/V installation and media technology.
- Audio-video editing skills (Adobe Creative Cloud Suite), and print and online design.
- Experience with logistics related to shipping, packing, and art handling.
- Strong communication and organizational skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Familiarity with Mac OS, Google Drive, Slack, and other relevant software.
- Ability to lift up to 50lbs.
