The City Bar Justice Center (CBJC) seeks an enthusiastic and organized individual with a passion for communications and who is committed to equal access to justice to join our growing team as a Communications and Outreach Coordinator. CBJC annually provides high-quality, free civil legal services benefiting over 25,000 New Yorkers who lack the resources to hire private counsel. CBJC also relies on partnerships with the City Bar, law firms, corporate legal departments, the courts, and other stakeholders. In the past year, over 2,200 pro bono attorneys donated services to support clinics and client matter work drawn from CBJC’s dozen civil legal services projects. The Communications and Outreach Coordinator plays a critical role in helping to raise awareness of our services and the impact that our work has.
Reporting to the Director of Advancement, the Communications and Outreach Coordinator’s principal responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Maintain CBJC’s core communications processes, including:
- Propose, plan, and create timely, relevant content for key stakeholders – e.g., clients, volunteers, pro bono and community partners, and funders – including by managing a robust editorial calendar and process focused on crafting a unified voice and message consistent with CBJC’s mission, work, and brand
- Oversee and maintain all communication platforms (e.g., newsletter, social media, website), monitor account activity, and identify/implement best communications practices
- Curate diversified digital and print materials including social media graphics, flyers, presentations, and videos, and develop/publish content for all CBJC communications, including email blasts, newsletters, online campaigns, news, press releases, and event and programming promotion
- Support CBJC’s outreach initiatives and strategic plan implementation:
- Help build and maintain collaborative relationships with key stakeholders that support CBJC’s mission, including by creating and managing a list of community contacts, identifying opportunities for collaboration, and participating in relevant external gatherings
- Assist in implementing outreach strategies to sustain and enhance CBJC’s capacity to reach those in need of our services, including by creating structured outreach plans for individual CBJC projects, and developing and distributing print and digital information and outreach materials
- Assist with grant reporting and other general CBJC administrative and programming support
- Support CBJC management in implementing the organization’s 2023-26 Strategic Plan, including by rebalancing communications and public relations strategies to more effectively and meaningfully engage key stakeholders
- Other City Bar Justice Center administrative tasks as assigned
Experience, Skills, And Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or substantially equivalent work experience in a professional setting, with a minimum of 1-2 years administrative experience required (relevant internships acceptable), preferably in communications, outreach, community organizing, or partnership building
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, high energy and passion for supporting a mission-driven nonprofit organization, and ability to maintain a courteous and professional demeanor with a diverse range of partners and stakeholders
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as collaboratively with a team
- Exceptional attention to detail, and superb organizational and time management skills
- Self-starter with demonstrated ability to anticipate needs, efficiently multi-task, work well under pressure, and meet time-sensitive deadlines
- Strong technology skills, including proficiency with Office 365 and a knack for social media and online communications are required; knowledge/experience with media and communications platforms (e.g., LinkedIn, X, Facebook, Mailchimp, WordPress) and graphic design skills – including basic knowledge of design software such as Canva or Adobe Creative Suite – are highly preferred
- Demonstrated commitment to nonprofit/public interest work, serving communities that are under-resourced, and advancing racial equity and social and economic justice
The City Bar Justice Center has a hybrid work environment. Candidates for this position must be available for in-person work in Manhattan on a hybrid schedule requiring roughly 2-3 days of scheduled in-office work per week, with the balance of time work-from-home or involving occasional other local work-related travel. Availability outside standard work hours may occasionally be required. This position is open for immediate hire.
The annualized salary range for this position is $48,000-$52,000 for a 35-hour workweek, based on skills and experience.
