Anicka Yi Studio is seeking a Digital Designer/Fabricator to join our creative and production team. This role is central to the design, prototyping, and fabrication of new artworks, combining advanced digital modeling with hands-on production techniques. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in design, a keen eye for aesthetics, and a passion for pushing creative boundaries. We are looking for a technically skilled and creatively minded individual who thrives in an interdisciplinary art studio environment.

Key Responsibilities

Digital Design:

Lead the digital design process, translating conceptual briefs into detailed 3D models, sketches, and technical drawings using CAD software. Adapt designs for artist feedback, ensuring alignment with the artistic vision.
Develop and prototype new artworks, integrating industrial design principles with a focus on materials, structure, and form.
Experiment with advanced digital tools such as Grasshopper, Runway ML, and DALL-E, applying a strong design sensibility to create innovative design solutions (expertise not required, but a willingness to explore and learn is essential).
Prepare precise technical specifications and design documentation, including installation and maintenance manuals that bridge digital design concepts with fabrication processes.

Fabrication & Production:

Operate and maintain CNC machines, laser cutters, 3D printers (SLA/PLA), and other digital fabrication equipment as needed; generate files for CNC cutting and 3D printing.
Integrate digital design with traditional fabrication methods, including mold making, carpentry, and metalworking, to bring complex designs to life.
Coordinate with external fabricators and vendors, managing quotes, timelines, and ensuring production quality, while emphasizing design accuracy and precision.
Maintain a well-organized archive of design files, technical specs, and project documentation in the studio’s database.

Exhibition & Studio Support:

Create detailed 2D and 3D renderings of exhibition spaces, working closely with galleries and institutions to design layouts and plan installations.
Collaborate on exhibition designs that incorporate both artistic vision and practical considerations for space and materials.
Assist with the installation of artworks, ensuring that design elements are translated accurately from digital models to physical space.
Maintain project timelines, budgets, and shop safety, supporting the overall workflow of the studio.

Requirements

Proficiency in 3D modeling software (e.g., Rhino, Grasshopper, Blender, Adobe Creative Suite).
Strong experience with digital fabrication techniques, with an emphasis on operating and troubleshooting 3-axis CNC machines, laser cutters, and 3D printers.
Knowledge of traditional and digital image editing software (Photoshop, InDesign) and familiarity with experimental software (StyleGAN, RunwayML).
Experience with traditional sculptural fabrication techniques, including mold making, carpentry, and finishing, is a plus.
At least 2-3 years of experience in digital design or fabrication, ideally within an art fabrication setting; 5+ years is preferred.
A keen interest in contemporary art, science, and technology, with the ability to engage in creative collaboration and explore new materials.
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with a collaborative mindset.
